What NASA Scientific Visualization Studio is
NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio (svs.gsfc.nasa.gov), at Goddard Space Flight Center, publishes about ten thousand pages of visualisations and animations made from scientific data: weather and climate, ocean currents and sea level, the Sun, the Moon's terrain, planets and galaxies. Most pages carry 1080p and 4K MP4s, often at 60 frames per second, and some include vertical versions.
Best for
Striking, explanation-free motion backgrounds and science b-roll: rotating Earths, hurricanes, solar activity, lunar flyovers, star fields. No people or logos, which makes them easy to use.
Licence and what it means for your video
Produced by NASA and in the public domain in the US. Credit 'NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio'. Because data visualisations show no people or insignia, they are not flagged editorial; a few pages credit partner organisations, so check the page's credits for those.
How Video Assets Server searches it
Through the studio's JSON API. Its search returns titles and descriptions but no media, so the first results of each search are opened to read their poster, frame size and files (cached for a day); later results get their media when you open them, which is why some cards have no poster.
